Wild Sea Calligraphy

I was recently given the opportunity to have a one to one session with the lovely Lyndsey from Wild Sea Calligraphy.

I have always wanted to try my hand at the art of modern calligraphy. Its elegance and style has had me captivated but never have I felt willing enough to try it without the guidance from a seasoned professional. I spoke with Lyndsey of Wild Sea Calligraphy and expressed my desire to learn and she was more than willing to help.

With Lyndsey on board we needed a fitting location for the session. Where better than The Park, in Mawgan Porth. Having stayed at The Park before and knowing how nice it is there, it made complete sense to use the conservatory of their Kitchen by the sea restaurant.

With the birds singing and sheltered from the drizzly grey day, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast provided by The Park. It was a great chance to get an insight into Lyndsey’s journey of creating Wild Sea Calligraphy and it was abundantly apparent how passionate she is about sharing her love for modern calligraphy and teaching this wonderful art with others.

Lyndsey provided me with one of her beginners calligraphy kits, which has everything you need to get started. It includes:

  • Introduction sheet to calligraphy
  • 12 page beginners guide booklet
  • Straight pen holder
  • Pen nib
  • HB pencil
  • Black calligraphy ink
  • Calligraphy paper
  • and even a herbal tea to set the mood.

Lyndsey sells these kits for just £30 if you wanted to try this at home yourself, or you can attend one of her workshops.

We started by talking through how to use the pen and to hold the pen correctly. Lyndsey talked through the different types of strokes and pressures needed on the pen to achieve the variety of lettering styles.

From there we started practicing the different basic movements I would need to learn, then the fun bit came of actually trying out some letters. I started by tracing over letters from the guide booklet and then redoing each letter without the guide. Initially it was a lot harder than I thought it would be, but, soon got into the rhythm of things.

Quite often I get consumed in the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life. I found something so relaxing and calming about modern calligraphy. It was so enjoyable to be fully immersed in every movement the pen made, and truly switching off from the outside world. Time slowed down, I was engrossed in the simplicity of the exercises and creation of beautiful lettering.

It was so much fun. Lyndsey was so patient with me. She corrected me when I was going wrong (which happened a lot) she is extremely knowledgeable and really makes you feel comfortable.

She holds regular workshops all over the county and in Plymouth. Head to the Wild Sea Calligraphy instagram and website to keep up to date with when and where these are being held and get involved.

Thank you so much Lyndsey for teaching me this wonderful skill I will keep practicing and creating beautiful art.

*I was gifted this one to one session and beginner kit in the purpose of a review, but all thoughts are my own.
